Apple's promotional center sparks controversy on Chinese campus

Apple may be one of the hottest aspirational brands in China, but students from the country’s most prestigious university are accusing the company of invading precious study space by opening a promotional center inside a campus library.

The glass-enclosed Apple Experience Center will occupy about 430 square feet in a former study area on the third floor of Peking University’s main library, according to the People’s Daily.

Students will get to tool around on Apple gadgets to help with their studies and order products at a discount, the state-run newspaper reported.

But some students say the center inappropriately combines consumerism with academics –- a mix that is already more than familiar on American campuses

“It's totally against the spirit and environment of the library,” said a student surnamed Chen, according to the People’s Daily. “Apple should have discounts or give-back activities if they want self-promotion, other than introducing this commercial thing into a sacred place like this.”

Other students noted that competition is fierce for seats inside the library and the center would only make a shortage of study space worse.

“They shouldn’t take up precious self-study facilities,” Xiao Wu, a student, told the National Business Daily.

The center is being managed by a licensed Apple dealer called Shanghai Lianyu Technology Development Co.

Nine universities in China feature similar centers, though all in non-academic areas of campus, according to Apple’s Chinese website.

The Cupertino-based company has experienced phenomenal growth in China in recent years, capturing a cult-like following among the country’s growing middle and upper classes.

The company’s revenue in greater China, which includes Hong Kong, reached $8.8 billion the first three quarters of this year -– six times more than a year ago.

Microsoft unveils its new Windows 8 operating system

Microsoft has taken the wraps off the next generation of its Windows operating system.
Windows 8 is designed to run on tablet computers, as well as desktop and laptop PCs.
The software, which is due to be released in 2012 will work on the popular ARM-designed low power processors for the first time.
Microsoft has been under pressure to come up with an answer to Apple's iOS and Google's Android platforms.
Unveiling Windows 8 at the Build developers' conference in California, Windows division president Steven Sinofsky declared: "We re-imagined Windows. From the chipset to the user experience."
The system will function through one of two interfaces; a traditional desktop, similar to that seen in previous editions of Windows, and a tablet version, known as Metro.
Metro features larger, chunky controls of the sort that best suit touchscreen use. The current lack of such an input method is widely seen as the reason why few Windows 7 tablets exist.
Microsoft said that it would also be launching its own online marketplace - the Windows Store - to sell downloadable applications.

Chip changes
One of the biggest innovations for Windows 8 will be its compatibility with processors designed by ARM holdings.
Chips based around the ARM architecture typically use very little power, and as a result are found in the vast majority of smartphones and tablets currently available.
To date, Windows devices have required Intel or Intel-compatible processors, with the exception of Microsoft's Windows Phone range.
ARM chips are likely to be predominantly used on Windows 8 Metro devices, and will require ARM-specific versions of applications.
The company has not given details on the chips that will be integrated into desktop and laptop machines.
Tapping into any section of the Windows market will be seen as a huge boost for Cambridge-based ARM Holdings.
The company faces growing competition in the mobile device sector since Intel launched its tablet and smartphone-focused Oak Trail chipset in April 2011.
Tapping into that particular market is seen as vital for hardware manufacturers, and software-makers, such as Microsoft, as the market for traditional computers continues to be eroded.
Industry analysts Gartner predicted in April that the global market for tablets would reach 70 million this year, and grow to 300 million in 2015.
Sales of desktops and laptops are expected to continue growing, but at a much slower rate than in the past.

Miss Angola crowned Miss Universe in Brazil

SAO PAULO: Miss Angola Leila Lopes, a business student from the town of Benguela in her home country, was crowned Miss Universe on Monday after dazzling a panel of judges with her beauty and impressing them with her brain.

Lopes, 25, laughed and smiled as she hugged runner-up Miss Ukraine Olesia Stefanko, then felt a crown placed carefully on her head at the pageant held in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Earlier in the contest, Lopes had been asked what she might change about her physical characteristics if she could, but Lopes said she was satisfied with who she was.
“I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty,” she told the judges and the audience. “I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family, and I plan to follow those through the rest of my life.”
Lopes takes her place as the winner of the 60th annual Miss Universe pageant.
It is an annual event watched by millions of people around the world on TV who cheer for the young women competing in categories ranging from swimsuits to evening gowns. They also must answer the critical question that tells the judges a bit about them.
Lopes had worn a bright bikini, then paraded around the stage with poise in a form-fitting evening gown colored in gold and silver sequins and feathers.
In fan voting, Lopes tallied only a 3.6 score for the swimsuit but earned a 7.2 for her evening gown. Fan voting, however, did not count in the final tallies from nine judges.
The panelists, who ranged from race car driver Helio Castroneves to actress Vivica A. Fox and journalist Connie Chung, scored the women on each contest, narrowing from a group of 16 down to a final five that included women from China, the Philippines and the home country, Brazil. In all, 89 women competed for the title.
The show was hosted by U.S. television personalities Andy Cohen and Natalie Morales.

Brilliant Brady beats Dolphins with record-breaking passing

MIAMI (Reuters) - A masterful Tom Brady threw a career and franchise record 517 yards as the New England Patriots enjoyed a 38-24 win at AFC East rivals the Miami Dolphins in the National Football League on Monday.
The outstanding Brady completed 32 of 48 passes, throwing four touchdowns and crowned his display with a remarkable 99 yard touchdown pass to Wes Welker -- only the 12th time such a play has been made in the league.
The two-time league MVP became just the 11th quarterback in the NFL to throw over 500 yards in a game as he eclipsed his previous best passing yardage of 410 set against Kansas City in 2002.
The Dolphins had begun brightly with a touchdown on the opening drive with quarterback Chad Henne running over from nine yards before Brady, helped by some poor Miami defense, began his domination.
Miami fought back to 14-14 early in the third quarter, taking advantage of an interception from Brady, but although Henne threw a career-best 416 yards, the Patriots were easy winners.

True Blood Season 4 Finale Recap: The Death and The Rise

The witch has finally gone in the season 4 finale of  "True Blood" but that was not without sacrifice. [SPOILER ALERT!] Jesus was dead after he was stabbed by Marnie who possessed Lafayette, leaving the latter feel guilty. Marnie, however, finally left Lafayette's body after the dead spirits, including Sookie's grandmother and Antonia, showed up to help Sookie.

Later Nan visited Bill and Eric to tell them that she has quit the AVL and the Authority. She asked the two guys to join forces with her to harness Sookie's powers, but Bill and Eric turned down the offer. When Nan insulted Bill and Eric, they attacked Nan and her two troops.

Also after the showdown with the witch, Sookie decided that she won't choose either Bill or Eric. Meanwhile, Alcide had earlier met Sookie at the bar and revealed that he dumped Debbie. He also opened up about his feeling to Sookie, but she said she cannot change her heart.

At another place, Alcide found a broken chain at a parking garage, where Russell Edgington was buried. Leaving more cliffhangers, Rev. Steve Newlin returned in front of Jason and showed off his fangs, while Sam was confronted by a werewolf.

The Sunday (September 11) episode ended with Debbie coming to Sookie's house bringing a shotgun. She fired her gun at Sookie, but Tara jumped in and took the bullet. Sookie then took the riffle and shot Debbie.
